I get so many questions (and compliments) about how I organized my school counseling portfolio since sharing it on Instagram. Well, wait no more my friend! I am spilling all the details on how I put mine together so that your school counseling portfolio will STAND OUT. But wait, there is more! I am FINALLY offering this portfolio bundle ready. to. go. So, no worries, I’ve got you covered!
Now, not all school counseling programs are created equally. Thus, your portfolio might look very different from mine. I have seen some programs that require an electronic portfolio via building their own website! However, I hope that this will give you some tips (and motivation) on how you can present your portfolio. Remember, this portfolio reflects you and what you can bring to the table! So let’s talk about how we can showcase that.
Prepping your portfolio:
Firstly, throughout your program, you should keep all your documents!
I kept a separate accordion file folder labeled with each class on the tabs. Some of my classmates used file cabinets or even boxes (I wouldn’t recommend this last one. It will be a pain to sift through). You just need something to put it all in, so you have one go-to place to retrieve your coursework.
Here are some items you want to hold on to and place in your accordion:
- Presentations & projects (including group work – include your role/contribution)
- Practicum & internship log of hours approved by professors
- Handouts & activities you created or helped create
- All assignments; mainly, research papers and exams. Graded work is best.
Secondly, you will need to purchase a great binder.
You will need to hold on to this portfolio for a few years and you might have to lug it around to interviews. Thus, spend a few extra bucks and get a sturdy one. I LOVE these better binders from Staples. My professor always complimented me on how it looked. I chose a blue color because I like to stand out in the sea of black and white binders. However, see what is requested of you from your program!
Thirdly, purchase a few packets of tabs.
You’ll need a lot of them! June-August is usually back-to-school season here in the USA, so I recommend picking these things up early so you can snag them at a great price and not wait until last minute like I did!
Look inside my binders:
This is my professional portfolio, a 3 inch ring bound binder. I color coordinated my table of contents with my tab colors. By doing this, it was easier for me and my professor to find things! I made the colored boxes using a table and filing it with a color that closely matched my tabs because…well….it looks pretty and polished! Don’t have the time to do this yourself? Employment portfolio say what?!
Yes, we had to create an employment portfolio as well, which is what you’ll most likely bring to interviews. Ours was relatively simple and focused on what we accomplished during our internship/fieldwork.
Things to highlight in your employment portfolio, so it stands out!
- Print the presentations that you led in color, if possible (see picture below).
- Highlight any interventions you implemented. Our program required a semester long intervention at a school site, so I made sure to showcase this. Great tool for interview questions as well!
- We were required to show data in at least one domain. It is even better if you have proof of experience in all 3 domains – personal/social, career and academic! If you are lacking in one area, branch out!
