Greetings my upper grade counselors!
If you work in the HS setting or college setting like myself, then you already know what time it is! FAFSA / Financial Literacy season among a bunch of other things like…
Financial Aid Questions.
Letters of Recommendations.
And. So. Much. More!
Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Let’s start with the first one! The FAFSA application is right around the corner and many students are still under the impression that FAFSA season starts in January!
So how do you get the word out? How do you reach a large amount of students without a bunch of class visits and meetings? Well, you promote a financial aid campaign!
Start with a FAFSA campaign!
It can be so hard to get the word out to students about financial aid, especially if you have a large caseload (I know most of you do!), so I have created a FAFSA bulletin board bundle with all of the most asked questions and important information about the FAFSA Application! Now, although this is for bulletin boards, please know that this bundle comes with so much that you can hang in your office, post around campus, and hand out to parents! Just click the image to pick it up!
Host a FAFSA parent information night
This can be a, one night, each week per month kind of deal. The months I recommend hosting the campaigns are October (the month FAFSA opens), January (the old start month), and the time when students start hearing back from colleges. This will vary per state! For California, this might be March 2nd (our priority deadline) – April / May (college acceptance decision time). During these info sessions, you want them to know major deadlines, resources and how they can get help! You don’t need to be a financial aid expert to help them with this!
Organize your major events for the year
Don’t get too caught up in the day-to-day grind. This is an easy trap to fall into because of how busy we are! Be sure to plan out these events well in advance!
I hope this post gives you some ideas on how to inform your students about financial aid, allowing them to realize that for a lot of them, college IS possible to pay for! How are you gearing up for FAFSA season? Connect with me on social media @collegecounselortraci.
Until next time!
