The life of a counselor is a crraaazzyyyy one.
Am I right?
I mean we love how dynamic our jobs can be. It keeps us on our toes, but we certainly have those days in which we are barely hanging on! I know it can be really hard to wrap our head around everything we need to do in a day, week, month, and year!
I know my friend! I have been there and it has been a journey! However, after many, many months of searching and fine-tuning, I have created a resource I use. every. single. day.
Why do I use this resource? It is because it combats the major road block to peace of mind for a counselor.
That light at the end of the tunnel.
That barrier to having self-care.
I am sure you could have guessed that!
Our struggle with time leads us to:
- Overwhelm – stage one.
- Too much to do, too little time – stage two.
- Can’t-do-all-the-things – stage three.
- Burn out…
Does this sound like you?
I know it was me for the longest time!
Ok, I’ll keep this super short and sweet, because time preserving is the name of the game in this post! I am going to share my secret with you to get things done so you can gain back your TIME.
But first you need to download my FFRREEEE Counselor Planner Starter Kit, because I want you to have the right tools to get started.
Okay, let’s get started!
Combating overwhelm – Do a brain dump. Use a scratch sheet of paper and write down alllllll the things in your to-do-list-mind that is causing you overwhelm. Now, use the reminder sheet from the starter kit. Grab a couple of 3×3 Post-it notes, jot down your TOP to-do items in these categories and STICK THEM! Yes you are limited to just a post-it note! This is one of the secrets to tricking yourself into prioritizing your time, from a birds eye view.
Here are your categories:
- This morning
- This week
- This month
- This year
Too much to do, too little time – Organize your time. Easier said than done, I know.
But you already have your top items to do, so let’s put them down somewhere the post-it note doesn’t fly off into the wind, shall we?
Use your yearly calendar to write down all the events for the year. Never miss a major event with this beauty.
Next, use your weekly schedule and write down one major action item each day that is a MUST-DO.
Bonus secret! How do you narrow down, that ONE major action item per day?
Here’s how: Annnnyyythhing that directly positively impacts students, come first.
It’s actually that simple.
- Organizing that library – not now.
- Checking those back logged emails – nope.
- Following up with little Jimmy’s parents – Top priority.
It is reaallllyyy hard to argue against serving students… Why else would we be here?
FINAL STAGE (because we are NOT going to burn out)!
Can’t-do-all-the-things – S. O. S.
Well, then don’t.
On your weekly schedule, you wrote down one major action item to complete each day.
If that is too much, because our weeks are crraazzzyyy, then you see that little “Top Priority” box? Write, down your top priority for the week.
Now, there is only ooonnneeee top priority box, not three…
Therefore, choose only ONE priority. I know, this is hard for us!
A book that changed my life is called The One Thing. It talks about single. focused. actions. Multitasking is for the delusional!
As counselors we know the impact of staying focused on the situation at hand; it can be life changing…so let’s use it to change our lives. To take care of ourselves, so we can take care of others.
TLDR; the secret to self-care as a counselor = mastering our time.
Once you can wrap your head around the time wasted worrying about time, then you can use your time to get things done, with clarity, so you can feeeelllll good to do what you do best. Impact freaking lives daily!
Come oooooon. Who doesn’t want to do more of that?
This binder is alllll you need to maximize your time, and get organized, so you can be in the best mindset possible!
Comment down below on how you are working on being more organized this year!
I’d love to hear about it!
